Bulgaria's coastal sand dunes are home to rare plants and enjoy protection under Bulgarian and EU environmental protection laws.

Yet the landscape is scarred by hundreds of illegal buildings and construction works, causing anger among eco-activists and the general public.

They believe the reason for this is the rampant corruption that puts Bulgaria at the bottom of Europe’s corruption indexes.
