As unemployment benefits are set to run out for millions of Americans, President Donald Trump is still refusing to sign off on a new pandemic aid package.
The aid would have included US$600 in COVID-19 relief checks to most Americans, but despite having won sweeping approval in both houses of Congress, Trump criticized the bill just days before Christmas, saying he instead wants US$2,000 checks sent out. It sent lawmakers scrambling as the spending bill that included the aid would have helped avoid a partial government shutdown Tuesday.
As Jennifer Johnson reports, Democrats and Republicans are now butting heads over how much additional aid should be provided.
