Two scientists in the United Kingdom expressed cautious optimism on Monday about the recent early snapshot Pfizer provided of its Phase 3 trials for its coronavirus vaccine, which data has suggested is 90 per cent effective at preventing the virus.

Beate Kampmann, head of the Vaccine Centre at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said the news from Pfizer was “really exciting and encouraging” both about the individual vaccine and RNA technology, but said more information is needed.

“I don’t want to put a spoiler alert on this, but we need to know how long the protection will last,” she said. “And at the moment we’re looking at data from 28 days of the follow up after the volunteers had received their first two injections.”

Loughborough University’s Dr. Duncan Robertson was also cautious as he expressed excitement over the development, adding that there are some “regulatory hurdles” to get through in the United Kingdom and across the globe.
