In early December, Ireland had one of the lowest COVID-19 infection rates in Europe. But that has changed rapidly.
Ireland now has one of the highest infection rates per capita in the world.
Since the New Year, approximately one-in-70 people in the country have tested positive for the virus. On Wednesday, Ireland reported 63 new deaths – it's highest daily death toll since April.
As Redmond Shannon explains, this surge in cases is not being blamed on the more infectious U.K. strain.
