AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford on Monday announced that their coronavirus vaccine currently in late-stage trials was showing it was up to 90 per cent effective, the latest vaccine to see such a high efficacy rate.

Oxford officials working on the vaccine study said that while the headline on their report essentially showed a 70 per cent protection, vaccine group director Andrew Pollard explained those who received a half dose and then received a full dose for their second dosage showed 90 per cent effectiveness. The lead of the vaccine study, Sarah Gilbert, said they'd be analyzing why a half-dose, full-dose regimen saw better efficacy, but said it may be a "better way of kicking the immune system into action."

Officials also touted that the vaccine would be beneficial because it does not need to be stored in a freezer, instead being able to be distributed in the "conventional" way for all vaccines. This could be helpful, for example, in transporting vaccines to countries that may have higher temperature environments.
