Shops in Amsterdam barricaded their windows on Wednesday after rioting and looting spread across the Netherlands earlier this week, prompted by a night-time curfew to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

After a relatively calm Tuesday night, life resumed in the capital but people showed disappointment and anger at the unrest.

"It's really a pity how people are seeking these riots, instead of just demonstrating," said local resident, Michelle.

Rioting rocked the country on Monday night, leading to the arrest of more than 180 people for burning vehicles, stone throwing and widespread looting.

The Netherlands' first curfew since World War Two was imposed on Jan. 23 despite weeks of falling infections, after the National Institute for Health (RIVM) said a faster-spreading COVID-19 variant first found in England was causing a third of cases.
