Coping with cancer: Young people using humour and levity to deal with their diagnosis

For many young Canadians who hear the words, “You have cancer,” finding levity in that scary diagnosis is key to coping with the stress that comes with it.

For 32-year-old Chelsey Gomez, a two-time Hodgkin lymphoma survivor, humour was key to dealing with her cancer diagnoses. She spreads joy in the cancer space through her Instagram page called “Oh You’re So Tough,” where she posts colourful, funny, and often-sarcastic cancer memes she draws.

And for others, such as Sickboy Podcast founder and co-host Jeremie Saunders, having difficult discussions on his show with people who suffer from chronic or terminal illnesses, including cancer, break down barriers and take away the “awkwardness” of the topics.

As Global’s Alexia Kapralos reports, laughter may not always be the best medicine to treat the physical symptoms of cancer, but for some, it just may be the best medicine.
