With only two days left of the United Nations (UN) COP28 climate summit, there is still no consensus on the future of fossil fuels. At least 80 countries — including the U.S. — are in favor of an international commitment to end the use of oil and gas, which would be a first of its kind.

But major energy producers are pushing back. OPEC nations are among those resisting the hardest against a global agreement for fossil fuel phaseouts.

The latest version of negotiations, which were released Friday, shows countries considering several options ranging from agreeing to phasing out fossil fuels, phasing out "abated fossil fuels" with carbon capture and storage, to no mention of phasing out fossil fuels at all.

Heather Yourex-West has more on the impasse.
