The UN's COP28 climate conference formally launched a 'loss and damage' fund on the first day of a two-week meeting in Dubai. The fund has long been a request from nations vulnerable to and devastated by natural disasters linked to global warming.
At the summit, participants from 200 countries will discuss how to curb the climate crisis. The goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees, agreed in Paris in 2015, cannot be achieved on current plans. According to a new UN report, the world is heading for a rise of up to 2.9 degrees compared to pre-industrial times.
