COP28: Fossil fuel phaseout key sticking point as climate summit enters final stages

The United Nations (UN) COP28 climate conference is fast approaching its final stages in Dubai. With the deadline just days away, governments are running out of time to arrive at a consensus on climate commitments. The sticking point is failure to agree to the world's first-ever commitment to phase out fossil fuels in 30 years.

"While I know we're making progress, I don't think we're making it fast enough," COP28 president Sultan al-Jaber said. "I repeatedly called on all parties to bring consensus on language on fossil fuels. And I am sure you would agree with me that this is the first ever presidency to do so."

"I want everyone to come prepared with solutions. I want everyone to come ready to be flexible and to accept compromise.. I want them to know failure or lack of progress or watering down my ambition is not an option," al-Jaber warned.

For island nations, the threat of rising sea levels is urgent. Vanuatu’s Minister of Climate Change Ralph Regenvanu said that COP28 “needs to deliver both on fossil fuel phaseout, renewables and an end to fossil fuel subsidies. The science tells us that these commitments are crucial to meeting a 1.5 Celsius degree aligned pathway."
