World leaders gathered in Egypt on Monday for the beginning of the COP27 United Nations (UN) climate conference.

Talks on reparations for poorer states disproportionately affected by climate change are set to feature prominently in the conference.

United Nations Secretary General António Guterres told the gathered leaders they face a stark choice to work together now to cut emissions or condemn future generations to climate catastrophe, while former U.S. vice-president Al Gore said world leaders had a "credibility problem."

Guterres told the conference the world is currently on "a highway to climate hell."

The speeches set an urgent tone as governments sit down for two weeks of talks on how to avert the worst of climate change.
