Even during a pandemic, some traditions must continue. The annual confetti test ahead of New Year's Eve in Times Square in New York City carried on Tuesday.

The windy weather whipped colorful tissue paper throughout the area, which was thrown by the Times Square Alliance and Countdown Entertainment, the co-organizers of Times Square New Year's Eve. The test is to ensure the air worthiness of the confetti that will help usher in the new year.

One ton of confetti will be released over Times Square on New Year’s Eve. However, unlike years past, New York City will bid farewell to 2020 without the usual huddled masses jamming the streets. Organizers will host a scaled-back virtual event due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The celebration in Times Square is among the biggest in the world, typically drawing about one million people, with more than one billion more tuning in on television.
