Every year, the Canadian government receives tens of thousands of requests for records under the Access to Information Act, much of them coming from businesses, academics and the media. But one of the law's biggest hallmarks is that Ottawa can never know who's made these requests.
Yet new records obtained by Global News' via an access to information (ATI) request show staffers for former immigration minister John McCallum tried to find out who made another request related to a 2017 Global News story involving McCallum.
