U.S. President Joe Biden described the Marshall wildfire in Colorado as a “blinking code red for our nation,” after touring the damage left behind by the fire. The fire destroyed nearly 1,000 homes and damaged hundreds more, officials said earlier this month.

It is one of the most destructive Colorado fires on record in terms of property losses. Biden has declared the scene of the Marshall fire a national disaster, freeing up federal funds to assist those impacted by the flames.

The normal wildfire season in Colorado typically does not extend into winter, but rising global temperatures have left vegetation in parts of the U.S. drier and more incendiary.
