In Colombia, the leftist senator Gustavo Petro has won the first round of voting in the country's presidential election. The former guerilla fighter and mayor of Bogota campaigned on a platform of tackling poverty and crime, while also moving away oil mining. Petro will now face the populist independent candidate Rodolfo Hernandez in a run-off vote next month. The businessman finished in a surprise second place in the vote.
