The partially collapsed condo in Surfside, Fla. where 24 people were confirmed dead was fully demolished late Sunday night ahead of the possible arrival of Tropical Storm Elsa.
A number of explosions could be heard and then the building started to fall, sending massive plumes of dust into the air in the surrounding neighbourhoods.
Search-and-rescue efforts for 121 missing people had been suspended in preparation for the controlled demolition, but workers were given an all-clear overnight to resume their search.
Ahead of the demolition, a crowd gathered along a nearby street to witness the event. Several people stood quietly with candles in vigil for those who were still missing.
