Widely known as the first Black U.S. secretary of state and his pivotal role in what's been dubbed America's "war on terror", Colin Powell has passed away at 84 after suffering complications from COVID-19.

Powell, also a retired four-star general, was fully vaccinated, but he also suffered from multiple myeloma - a cancer of plasma cells that suppresses the body's immune response - and Parkinson's.

Both conditions made him more vulnerable to the virus.

Jackson Proskow looks back at the complicated legacy left by a key player in Washington, D.C., after 9/11.
