Canola farmers in Alberta are expecting a bumper crop amid record high prices. It comes on the heels of new clean fuel regulations introduced by the federal government earlier this summer, which require fuel distributors to reduce emissions by 15 per cent by 2030.
Diluting petroleum with a lower carbon substitute is one option fuel distributors have to lower their carbon footprint. Under the new regulations, canola could be used as a biofuel feedstock.
But there are some doubts about the real impact these new regulations will have on emissions. And there’s also concern more biofuel could reduce efficiency – and drive up costs. Sarah Offin has the story.
