President Jovenel Moïse has been accused of illegally extending his time in power. Opposition parties say the Haitian leader should have stepped down last month, but he says he can remain until 2022 after presidential elections are held this year.

The dispute has been running since Moïse was voted into office in 2015 in an election that was later cancelled over allegations of fraud. He was voted in again a year later. Protests have turned violent, and there is no sign of anyone backing down.

So, is Moïse's government legitimate? The foreign minister of Haiti, Claude Joseph, talks to Al Jazeera.
