And now Chinese industrial fishing fleets have also been plundering the waters off the Galapagos coast - putting its fragile ecosystem under even further strain.
Officials are rushing to vaccinate the population - in an effort to revive the islands' multi-million pound tourism industry on which it so heavily depends.
