Hong Kong bans events to commemorate the Tiananmen Square massacre, ahead of the 33rd anniversary over the weekend.

Tiananmen remains one of the most delicate topics in Chinese history and politics. For weeks, students had occupied the space, demanding economic and political reforms until government officials had had enough. They declared martial law and the military moved in. Beginning in the early hours of June 4th, soldiers fired on civilians. China has never provided a complete death toll for the 1989 crackdown on the student-led demonstration.

We ask a former student leader who was at the protests in 1989, if this is in line with an attempt to whitewash the tragedy's history by Beijing.
