The United States should work with China to manage differences over the Chinese balloon that flew into U.S. airspace, China's foreign ministry said on Thursday.
"The Chinese unmanned civilian airship that strayed into U.S. airspace was completely a force majeure accident," foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said, when responding to a question regarding U.S. President Joe Biden's planned speech over the balloon.
Biden plans to soon make his most extensive remarks yet about a high-altitude Chinese balloon and three other objects that were shot down by U.S. fighter jets, two sources familiar with the discussions said on Wednesday.
Biden has been under pressure from lawmakers to speak more extensively about the spate of flyovers by unidentified objects, which have baffled many Americans. The U.S. has said the Chinese balloon was used for surveillance purposes, while Beijing called it a weather balloon.
He also said China was concerned and strongly opposed to NATO, saying defence ministers reached an agreement on its outlook regarding China as a threat. Wang went on to criticize the 2022-released NATO document Strategic Concept, which makes specific mention of China as a security challenge to the alliance.
