Chinese former president Hu Jintao was unexpectedly escorted out of the closing ceremony of the Chinese Communist Party’s 20th National Congress on Saturday.

Hu, 79, was President Xi Jinping’s immediate predecessor and was seated to the left of Xi. He was led off the stage of the main auditorium of the Great Hall of the People in Beijing by two stewards. Looking distressed, Hu appeared to initially resist leaving, before seeming to quietly exchange words with Xi on his way out.

As the twice-a-decade congress wrapped up, Xi said that the conference was a “complete success,” adding that it “achieved the purpose of unifying thoughts, strengthening confidence, clarifying direction and inspiring fighting spirit.”

The new Central Committee will choose the elite Politburo Standing Committee on Sunday, with 64-year-old Xi widely expected to secure a third leadership term.
