Chilean Interior Deputy Minister Manuel Monsalve condemned on Monday the violence that occurred following a Sunday demonstration that took place on the anniversary of the country's 1973 coup.
Demonstrators had marched through Santiago on Sept. 11 to commemorate the coup d'etat that toppled the government of leftist president Salvador Allende and saw Augusto Pinochet take power. During his 17-year rule, more than 3,000 people were killed or have disappeared while tens of thousands have been tortured. The protest Sunday was held to remember those who disappeared during the dictatorship, but violence broke out following the peaceful demonstration.
Monsalve called the violence "criminal and delinquent acts," saying people threw objects at police, while bearing sticks, bladed weapons and incendiary devices. In response, police fired water cannons and tear gas.
