The Chancellor has pledged billions of pounds more support for workers and businesses across the UK after he accepted that even those not forced to shut were facing “profound economic uncertainty”.

Rishi Sunak backdated support for many businesses in an apparent admission that earlier support for those facing coronavirus restrictions had not gone far enough. Many companies said the announcement had come too late as fears grow of mass job losses.

Businesses in the Tier 2 category had complained they were in a worse position, with less support, than those in the highest risk areas which have been told to close.

Under the new Treasury rules employers will pay less to support part-time staff — and more workers will be eligible for government support.

Employees will have to work at least 20% of their normal hours - as little as one day a week - in order to take home about three-quarters of their pay.
