At least 15 people died in a road accident in central India on Friday night after a passenger bus collided with a truck.

More than 40 people have been injured in the accident in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh state.

The injured have been admitted to Rewa's Sanjay Gandhi Medical College and the bodies of the deceased are at Teonthar Civil Hospital.

The accident took place around midnight when the bus, headed to northern Gorakhpur from southern Hyderabad, collided with a truck trolley. Around 100 people were aboard.

One passenger said the vehicle's brakes failed before the collision.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow over the accident and announced an ex-gratia of 200,000 rupees (US$2,423) to be given to the next of kin of the victims and 50,000 rupees (US$605) to the injured from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund.
