Census data reveals LGBT+ populations for first time in England and Wales

Figures on sexual orientation and gender identity have been included in the latest census for the first time.

People aged 16 and over were asked to provide this information on a voluntary basis.

More than 1.3m people in England and Wales said they identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual (3.2%) and 89.4% identified as straight or heterosexual.

More than 250,000 people said their gender identity is different to their sex at birth.
