With COVID-19 cases rising and political pressure mounting in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a new, 60-day moratorium on rental evictions.
It's a move the public health agency said would protect about 90 percent of Americans.
There had been fears millions could be left homeless if the ban was not extended after a moratorium had expired last Saturday.
A small group of progressive Democratic legislators led by Representative Cori Bush had camped out on the steps of the US Capitol building to protest official inaction on the eviction ban after the congressional chamber left Washington, DC, for a month-long recess.
President Joe Biden said that the measure is a stopgap while landlords wait for federal aid to be distributed.
