New York State park police Capt. Christopher Rola said on Thursday that the department believes the car that plunged into the Niagara River Wednesday morning on the U.S. side of Niagara Falls, which led to the death of the driver, was an intentional act.
Rola said they came to this assessment based on several factors, including the path the vehicle took, the barriers that were avoided and the driver's mental health history.
A woman in her 60s was pulled out of the submerged vehicle in frigid waters by the U.S. Coast Guard on Wednesday, but the vehicle remains lodged in the river.
The investigation is ongoing and police are awaiting autopsy results.
