Colombia’s defense minister has confirmed that 36 people were injured by two large explosions at a military base in Cucuta – three of them seriously wounded.

Diego Molano told reporters, ‘We reject and repudiate this vile and terrorist act which sought to attack the soldiers of Colombia.’ He added that two men in a white Toyota pickup truck drove into the facility, used by the 30th Brigade of the National Army, after representing themselves as officials. They apparently set the bombs off sometime later.

Molano said he would leave for Cucuta immediately to investigate along with General Luis Jimenez, the general commander of Colombia’s armed forces. According to military sources cited by Reuters, both civilians and army personnel were injured. The number of civilians wounded was not specified.

Molano said the government’s ‘initial hypothesis’ is that the National Liberation Army rebel group may be responsible. However, ‘dissidents’ with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia are under suspicion too – though no suspects have been identified.

As of now, no group has claimed responsibility.
