Federal national security officials testified in the second Senate hearing on Wednesday about what went wrong on Jan. 6, facing questions about missed intelligence and failed efforts to quickly gather National Guard troops that day as a violent mob took over the U.S. Capitol.

Senators questioned officials from the Pentagon, the National Guard, and the Justice and Homeland Security departments about their preparations as supporters of then-President Donald Trump talked online, in some cases openly, about gathering in Washington and interrupting the electoral count.

D.C. National Guard chief Maj. Gen. William testified when the Capitol security perimeter had been breached by "hostile rioters," it took more than three hours for the former president's Defense Department to approve a request for the National Guard to be deployed, after an urgent plea for reinforcements.

During his testimony, Walker revealed that Army leaders also privately worried about uniformed national guardsmen being "bad optics."
