International Development Minister Ahmed Hussen announced on Friday that Canada has resumed its funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

The nation cut funding from the UN agency in January following accusations from Israel that at least 12 UNWRA staff members were involved in the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks in south Israel that left more than 1,200 Israelis dead and approximately 240 taken captive.

Hussen said the decision to resume funding was made not only because UNRWA has implemented several “significant processes to address the allegations,” but because of the support needed by more than two million Palestinians in Gaza living without food, water and shelter.

Hussen also announced that Canada will partner with Jordan and the World Food Program to conduct air drops to deliver food, clothing and blankets to those in Gaza. Additionally, he said that the Canadian Armed Forces will provide more than 300 cargo parachutes to the Royal Jordanian Air Force to assist them in conducting airdrops in the strip.

Israel’s claims against UNRWA have not been backed by evidence, though the accused personnel were let go from the agency.
