On Wednesday, Canada's Emergency Preparedness Minister Harjit Sajjan will provide an update on the forecast for the 2024 wildfire season.
He will be joined by Environment and Climate Change Minister Steven Guilbeault, Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson and Minister of Indigenous Services Canada Patty Hajdu.
Canada's wildfire season is off to an early start, with experts and officials warning of increased fire activity over the spring period. Alberta Wildfire reported that the province's fire season officially began on Feb. 20, earlier than the standard start date of March 1. While five new active wildfires have burned in Alberta, they are all under control.
British Columbia has seen eight new wildfires start over 9.55 hectares of land this year, and all of them are out, under control, or being held, according to the BC Wildfire Service.
Canada experienced its worst wildfire season in 2023, with an unprecedented 18.5 million hectares of land burned.
