For 165 years, Indigenous people in Canada were the victims of unspeakable crimes, subject to abuse and the systematic destruction of their culture through a church-run residential school system.
And a National Day of Truth and Reconciliation has been observed for the first time to reflect on the mistakes of the past and the hard work left to be done.
