Canada's International Trade Minister Mary Ng announced Thursday that negotiations have begun on a new trade deal between Canada and the U.K.

Minister Ng made the announcement alongside her U.K. counterpart, Secretary of State for International Trade Anne-Marie Trevelyan.

Ng said any new trade deal would emphasize sustainable trade, with Trevelyan confirming that the two countries would share technology and expertise on issues ranging from electric vehicles to carbon capture and storage.

The new trade deal will also help Canadian and U.K. businesses “thrive into the future by benefiting from digital trade,” Ng said.

In addition, both ministers confirmed that trade negotiations would focus on boosting opportunities for women and racialized communities with the inclusion of a “dedicated gender chapter.”
