With her husband’s accession to the throne following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Camilla becomes Queen Consort and will take on a new role alongside King Charles III. Just over 25 years after the death of Charles’ first wife, Diana, Princess of Wales, Camilla remains a divisive figure in Britain.

At the age of 24, Camilla first met Charles when he was 22. In a notorious and long-winding road, Camilla ended up marrying British officer Andrew Parker Bowles while then-Prince Charles married Diana.

Throughout Camilla’s first marriage, she would often visit Balmoral Castle with Queen Elizabeth II, talking about everything from horse racing to their shared love for dogs. Tension rose as her relationship with Charles grew complicated, with many turning against her in the wake of Diana’s tragic death.

Finally marrying Charles in 2005, Camilla has quietly worked as a senior royal, standing by Charles’ side and engaging actively in charity work. But many people seemed to find it hard to forget — and forgive — their long-running affair and the impact it had on beloved public figure Diana.

In a Global News exclusive, Dawna Friesen speaks with royal commentator Angela Levin on how Camilla has rehabilitated her public image.
