Farming communities around California's Salton Sea are among the poorest in the United States, but the region is hoping a new mineral rush will bring prosperity to the area.
Vast amounts of lithium, used in electric vehicles and batteries, sit beneath the sea's floor and California, and the US, are anxious to exploit them.
Some predictions expect that the area will produce about a third of global lithium from the site.
That lithium is seen as a hope for a region down on its luck, and possibly a warming planet, as Al Jazeera's Rob Reynolds reports.
