The U.S. Coast Guard said on Tuesday that a massive oil spill that fouled Southern California beaches and killed wildlife was caused by a displaced pipeline.

Miles of beaches remain closed after roughly 126,000 gallons of oil were spilled into the Pacific Ocean. A leak in a pipeline was detected Saturday morning by pipeline operator Amplify Energy Corp.

"Upon further investigation, we've determined that approximately 4,000 feet of the 17.7 mile pipeline has been displaced. And it's been laterally displaced by 105 feet," said Rebecca Ore of the U.S. Coast Guard.

The movement of the pipeline was discovered by divers and remotely operated vehicles. On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Transportation said the entire pipeline should remain shut until ordered to be reopened.
