California may become the first jurisdiction in the United States to bar discrimination based on caste.
The caste system is a centuries-old tradition that began within Hinduism and also influenced other religions in South Asia.
The politician promoting the bill says it is a major issue in Silicon Valley, where many people of Indian origin work.
