The family of Ruth Whitfield and civil rights activist and attorney Benjamin Crump reflected on the legacy of Whitfield at a news conference on Monday, who was a victim of the mass shooting at a Buffalo, N.Y. supermarket on Saturday that killed 10 and injured three others.

Whitfield, 86, was the mother of former Buffalo fire commissioner Garnell Whitfield and stopped at Tops supermarket on her way home from visiting her husband of 68 years in a nursing home.

“What happened on Saturday was an act of domestic terrorism,” Crump said. “We have to define it as such.”

Out of the 13 victims, 11 were Black and two were white.

According to the police, the suspect had driven to the city heavily armed with an intent to target Black residents, posting a manifesto about his plan, and livestreaming the assault. The 18-year-old white male suspect is now in custody and has been charged with 1st-degree murder in the racially-charged killing spree.
