As the United States nears the 600,000 COVID-19 deaths, a tribute to the victims of the pandemic has gone on display on the fence surrounding Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn, N.Y.

With handmade cards personalizing the people who died, “Naming the Lost” honours loved ones and reflects individual and collective grief.

Included in the Brooklyn memorial is a separate tribute to those who have died in New York state nursing homes with white and pink slips of paper illustrating the number of deaths.

According to the organizers of the memorial, the tribute is a volunteer effort.

While the epicenter of the pandemic has shifted to places like Brazil and India in recent months, the United remains the hardest hit nation in terms of cumulative deaths.
