The war in Ukraine was high on the agenda of this week's BRICS meeting.
The host, Chinese president Xi Jinping, criticised what he described as the abuse of international sanctions.
It was also the first major diplomatic appearance of Russian President Vladimir Putin since Russia invaded Ukraine.
