Traffic moved through the Port of Dover, Europe’s busiest trucking port, without the chaos some predicted on Monday after the United Kingdom finally left the European Union's orbit.

"I don't think it is hype because I literally couldn't leave my road. I couldn't go for a drive and so it may be quiet now but I've seen what it was like before Brexit with our town being a lorry park and I'm expecting that to happen again," said Brad Evans, a Dover resident who still expects to see disruption.

Tom Hautekiet, the head of the Port of Zeebrugge for trade with Britain, said that new customs clearance procedures would only be truly tested over the next fortnight as traffic returns to normal.

Hautekiet likened preparations to "preparing for a hurricane" as the results were unexpected but said there has been a lull linked to the end of the transition period on Dec. 31 and the holiday season.

Britain left the EU's orbit on Jan. 1, just days after clinching a last-gasp divorce treaty under which there are no tariffs or quotas on the movement of goods originating in the U.K. and the EU.
