Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro sidestepped conceding to president-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who he lost to in Sunday's runoff election, but said he respected the constitution though did not mention a government transition to Lula.

"As long as I am president of the Republic and citizen, I will keep following all our Constitution's mandates. It's an honour being the leader of millions of Brazilians," he said on Tuesday, more than 44 hours after the election.

Gleisi Hoffmann, president of the Workers Party of which Lula is a founding member, said that Brazil "needs normality" and that the political transition needed to occur normally because "that's how a democracy is."

Despite Bolsonaro's comments, however, supporters of the outgoing president clashed with police Tuesday after setting up roadblocks and blockades that have paralyzed the country. Some supporters said there was no end date to their protests.
