U.K. MP Sir Graham Brady announced Monday that Prime Minister Boris Johnson had survived a a no-confidence vote after lawmakers questioned the British leader's authority over what has been dubbed the "partygate" scandal.

Of the 359 votes cast, his full party's caucus, 211 people voted in favour to keep Johnson as leader, while 148 cast a vote to oust him. He needed more than 180 votes to survive.

If Johnson had lost the vote among the 359 Conservative lawmakers, the party would have had a new leader, who will also become prime minister. However, due to his victory, he can’t face another challenge for a year under current party rules.

Regardless of the outcome, the fact that enough lawmakers are demanding such a vote represents a watershed moment for Johnson. It is also a sign of deep Conservative divisions, less than three years after Johnson led the party to its biggest election victory in decades.
