The first Boeing 737 MAX commercial flight in the U.S. since a 2019 safety ban that lasted 20 months following two fatal crashes that year took off Tuesday from Miami, Florida and landed in New York, New York.

Passengers shared mix feelings about the flight, operated by American Airlines, with one woman saying she would have accepted a flight rebook had she known about the plane model prior to boarding, but having now flown, said she "probably wouldn't really bat an eye towards it." Others said they trusted in the work that has been done to ensure safety.

The grounding was lifted by the Federal Aviation Administration in November after Boeing agreed to software upgrades and new safeguards on a key flight control system linked to both fatal crashes.
