Forestry PHD candidate Ira Sutherland says one way to understand the importance of forests is through the big tree registry, a community-driven initiative to record some of the province's biggest trees.

Anyone can nominate a tree and share a story about why it's special.

With growing concern about the threat to these big trees from logging, development and climate change, Sutherland hopes his research initiatives will help more people recognize that they're more than awe-inspiring natural wonders to be admired – but also living organisms, essential to the health of our planet.
