U.S. President Joe Biden is holding a joint news conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday. Zelenskyy is in Washington, D.C., for meetings at the White House, as he looks to shore up support to help Kyiv defend itself from Russia’s invasion, nearly two years on.

The meeting comes as U.S. Republican senators voted to block legislation to approve billions more dollars in military aid for Ukraine, which could “kneecap” Kyiv’s war effort and economic recovery according to the White House.

Republicans are seeking to back up that border security funding with policy changes — including restrictions on asylum seekers and restarting construction on a border wall — and are insisting on tying those to any new Ukraine aid.

Zelenskyy has met with Biden and Senate leadership before, but this will be his first meeting with Mike Johnson as House speaker.
