Four people have been killed in a mass shooting in Philadelphia overnight and a suspect has been taken into custody, according to the local police, in the latest outbreak of gun violence in the United States.
United States President Joe Biden has urged lawmakers to act after a series of shootings in major cities killed at least 15 people during the American Independence Day holiday, underscoring the country’s ongoing struggle with gun violence.
In a White House statement released on Tuesday, Biden called on Republican legislators to join him in putting forward “common sense reforms”, including a ban on assault weapons, universal background checks and an end to legal immunity for gun manufacturers.
