U.S. President Joe Biden traveled to Houston on Friday as the state works to recover from a severe winter storm that caused serious damage to homes and businesses, left millions without power or clean water for days, and killed at least two dozen people.
Biden and his wife, First Lady Jill Biden, met with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner to discuss the recovery from last week's storm, the first natural disaster to occur during his presidency. He also met volunteers at a Houston food bank and toured a health center where COVID-19 vaccines are being distributed.
The president warned during his address that COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations could go back up as new variants emerge. “It’s not the time to relax,” he said.
For 10 days, Texas was hit by an unusually prolonged period of very low temperatures. Electricity consumption surged, while many generating units failed to start up due to frozen instrumentation, iced turbine blades and insufficient fuel supplies.
